Kids Hurt Too Hawaii: Training Programs

Grieving and traumatized children and teens need adults to provide safe spaces, care and support. Often there is too little understanding and up-to-date information about grief and trauma in relation to young children and teens. Kids Hurt Too Hawaii has provided training to more than 9,500 people since its inception. We have offered this kind of support to not only our volunteer facilitators, but to other nonprofit organizations, schools, and counselors. We can offer CEU’s for licensed social workers. Training programs are designed to develop knowledge base and practical tools for the best possible care when engaging children impacted by loss and trauma. Kids Hurt Too Hawaii’s trainers are knowledgeable specialists as well as practitioners.

The training content and process was created and is provided by Cynthia White, M.A. the founding Executive Director of Kids Hurt Too Hawaii company website. Ms. White was the Training Director for The Dougy Center, an internationally respected program, based in Portland, Oregon.

The locally founded, Hawaii based program offers peer support groups and mentoring programs designed especially for grieving and traumatized children. Volunteer facilitators and mentors require additional specialized training and practice. To become a volunteer facilitator, please contact Kids Hurt Too Hawaii at (808) 545-5683. Volunteers are asked for a one year commitment that may involve as little as 4 hours a month once the training is completed. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. There is no other requirements. We do screening of volunteers and cannot guarantee that a trainee will be accepted as a facilitator or mentor once training is completed. Opportunities exist to work directly with children, teens, or adults in peer support groups. To work as a mentor in any of our mentoring programs, there is a mentoring orientation. Children and teens are always engaged in a group with other children. We do not offer one to one mentoring.

It is possible to access our training without the one year volunteering commitment. Please contact us to learn more about that arrangement and what we charge for the training. For those who volunteer with us, training is offered at a reduced cost.

Dates for training events are to be announced (TBA) and will be set after a minimum of ten people have registered. Most courses are provided on weekends or evenings unless we are contracted to provide training to groups by request.
